This reflective essay describes my encounter with reflective learning as a student enrolled in the University of Queensland Graduate Certificate in Education (Higher Education) program and the application and integration of reflective learning in a clinical course within the Bachelor of Oral Health program as an educator.
Students in Education are often asked to reflect on their own learning. This generally involves making connections between your own learning experiences and educational theories, as well as considering the implications for your future teaching practice.

Stephen D. Brookfield’s book, Becoming a Critically Reflective Teacher, is that teachers usually have specific assumptions about what effective teaching really means and what it entails. In this regard, teachers embark on imparting knowledge and new skills to their students based on what they assume to be the best approaches as appertains to effective teaching.
Reflective practice is considered as an evolving concept which views learning as “an active process of reviewing an experience of practice in order to describe, analyse, evaluate and so inform learning about practice.” (Reid, B 1993 cited in Garfat, T. 2005).
Consequently, the nature of learning opportunities is dependent on the experience, degree of confidence and attitudes of teachers (OFSTED, 2004). Furthermore, interacting with the environment allows teachers to realise that hands-on outdoor activities are multifaceted and have malleable possibilities, thus positively integrating outdoor teaching into the learning experience (Waite, 2017).
Student Teaching Experience Reflection My student teaching experience has been the best, most informational and inspiring experience in many years. Generally, I had a great time with my students, and I could not have asked for a better report with my cooperating teacher.
Teachers can convey the importance and purpose of reflection (formal learning). They can model the process of reflection through a “think aloud” and can even have students share their own thoughts with each other in small groups. But in the end, the student’s reflection needs to be about how they themselves learn (reflective learning).
The teacher reflects on the use of this learning method and considers how it could be improved and made more effective (reflection). She reads up on the use of role play and talks to more experienced colleagues and, as a result, formulates an improved version of the activity (abstract conceptualisation).
Reflective teaching means looking at what you do in the classroom, thinking about why you do it, and thinking about if it works - a process of self-observation and self-evaluation. By collecting information about what goes on in our classroom, and by analysing and evaluating this information, we identify and explore our own practices and underlying beliefs.

It is easy to slip into the mindset that all we can talk about is what we will do when we are teachers, but we have been trained well and have had so many rich learning experiences, and nothing beats being able to reflect on those and how I’ve grown as a teacher and allowing my potential future employer to see this shine through me as well!
Reflection leads to learning from experience and outlines strengths and weaknesses; by completing action plans to work on weaknesses will lead to continued learning and improvement. Rogers (1996,) states “Reflection on experience to action forms a large part of the learning process”.
I have grown exponentially in my management skills throughout this experience and have gained a lot of confidence in my ability to improve further with each future classroom. I’m excited to grow and learn as a teacher for many years to come thanks to this experience. Teaching is definitely a “learning process”.
